The Village of Lewiston Historical Preservation Commission (HPC) seeks to “protect, enhance, and perpetuate such buildings, structures, sites, or districts as is necessary to:
· Promote the health, prosperity, and safety of village citizens;
· Safeguard the area’s heritage by preserving elements of its cultural, political, economic, and aesthetic history;
· Foster civic pride in the beauty and noble accomplishments of the past; and
· Promote the use of such buildings, structures, sites, or districts for the education, pleasure and welfare of the people of the area (Village Code, Section 15-101).
The Village of Lewiston Historic Preservation Commission members are also committed to:
· Identify and protect architecturally significant properties and properties associated with events or persons (with the assistance of the Village historian, Lewiston Historical Association, and Village Board),
· Protect and enhance the Village of Lewiston’s attractiveness to visitors,
· Educate the public and residents on our heritage and history by celebrating and recognizing significant properties,
· Encourage harmonious and efficient growth within the Village (both business and residential) while respecting our heritage,
· Promote tourism through historic outreach.
